A legend on and off the air, Chris Murphy hits 25-year milestone at TWN

The Weather Network's Chris Murphy celebrates 25 years at the company. Join us as we delve into his career and recognize his numerous achievements over the years

When he's not on the lake landing a trophy fish, or enjoying a football game at home or in person, Chris Murphy is on air to talk about what he loves even more: Weather.

And he's been doing that for a long time now. For 25 years, Murphy has been a staple at Pelmorex Corp., the parent company of The Weather Network, as a veteran meteorologist giving people valuable weather information –– whether in their homes via television or on their cellphones through the company app.

According to his friend and colleague, Rachel Schoutsen, morning show host and journalist at The Weather Network, Murphy, or Murph, as he is known as to many, has made one of the biggest impressions on how forecasting and weather is explained in Canada for more than two decades.

Career highlights for Murphy include several on-location reports across Canada. While a lot of them are memorable for him, Murphy cited Hurricane Dorian impacts on Nova Scotia in September 2019 and the major January 2020 blizzard in St. John’s, N.L., as two of the standouts.

As for what inspired Murphy to take stage in front of a green screen many moons ago, his love affair with fishing since an early age and getting caught in bad weather aligned to create a perfect storm for his 25-year career at The Weather Network.

"I have been caught in the worst weather! Thunderstorms, rainstorms, snow squalls. But it was a hailstorm that finally [did the trick]," said Murphy. "I said, 'never again am I getting caught out in the lake like that.' I made a demo tape, fired it off to TWN (The Weather Network) and the rest is history."

With Murphy, people come for the weather and stay for the humour.
