Afterburn: Is there anything better than aloe?

Everyone overdoes it eventually. Here's the best remedy.

We are about to experience some of the hottest days of the year!

Summer happens when our hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. The perfect tilt also means we are coming into contact with strong UV rays. These rays cause sunburns.

We all make sun safety mistakes and if a fun afternoon in the sun ends up in a painful burn you’ll want to reach for the best afterburn solution.

WHAT IS THE BEST AFTERBURN SOLUTION?

Aloe vera has been known to treat sunburns exceptionally well.

“It can help with skin regeneration, in terms of helping the proteins develop and grow more skin back. It also has anti-infective inflammatory properties” says pharmacist Victor Wong. “Vitamin E has been shown to help with tissue regeneration. It is an antioxidant. But I would still vote aloe vera as the best for afterburn care.”

PLANT VERSUS GEL

The most natural way of applying aloe vera is directly from the plant. It is easy to snip off a section, split it open and use the clear gel directly on skin.

When purchasing gels look for organic products as these usually contain the least amount of extra additives. Most agree that the packaged gel container is an easier way of applying and keeping aloe ready this summer.

Both plant and gel deliver the same soothing effects.

ALOE VERA HACK

The best feeling on a sunburn is a cool sensation. Keep your aloe gel in the fridge! Apply a thin layer onto the burn for a cool healing sensation.

It is important to remember that aloe vera will not prevent sunburn. You should always rely on sun creams or sprays with broad-spectrum UV coverage.
