Spooky Nova Scotia caves and cliffs featured on hit Netflix show
The fictional town of Matheson depicted in the series 'Locke and Key' is actually the famously picturesque South Shore community of Lunenburg.
The caves and cliffs at the Ovens Natural Park near Lunenburg, N.S., are getting some serious exposure through the smash Netflix hit series Locke and Key.
Set in Massachusetts, the establishing shots of the fictional town of Matheson actually depict Lunenburg, with characters spending time along the cliffs of the geologically significant Ovens Park.
But unlike the tourism boom experienced in New Zealand after the release of The Lord Of the Rings, COVID-19 travel restrictions have meant a slow start to the local tourist season in Lunenburg. Still, the park is now open with a newly styled one-way trail that allows visitors to guide themselves around the sights featured in the show.
The site of the third-largest gold rush in Nova Scotia back in the 1800s, the local restaurant, aptly named the Ol' Miner Diner, has also found a way to adapt to the new normal.
Tables have been set up oceanside, while a live band that plays daily remains inside with music transmitted through speakers to patrons sitting out in the open air. You can get a glance of the musicians through the window.
Line cook Liam Frier says "It's been a testing time for a lot of people, a lot of businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, but you have to adapt and we found a way to move forward, and luckily we have a space where we can move things outdoors, and it's a luxury not a lot of people would have."
As for when the tourists will begin funnelling in, Frier says he expects things to really start to pick up in August.
