Think the air is safer indoors? Don’t hold your breath
You may think the best way to escape pollutants in the air is to take shelter indoors, but doing so may actually expose you to even more harmful toxins. The Weather Network's Kabir Bageria has some helpful tips to purify the air in your home this winter.
With all of the research available on the amount of pollution found outdoors, you may think the air is naturally safer inside your home. Well, it appears the opposite may ring true.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the concentrations of some pollutants found indoors are often two to five times higher than normal outdoor levels.
But don’t fret. There are things you can do to improve the quality of air inside your home so you aren’t breathing in pollutants that can pose a threat to your health.
One solution is to introduce fresh air into your residence, which you can do by installing an energy recovery ventilator. A secondary tip is to use a filtration system to sift out the pollutants in the air including dust, mould, pet hair, radon, and combustion byproducts, among others. Humidifiers and air purifiers are also good suggestions.
