Whether you're into city day trips or country overnight trips, follow these tips to make sure you have a smooth ride wherever you're headed this long weekend.

Sunny, clear skies can turn into grey skies rapidly during the summer months, but don't let it ruin your outing.

Follow these tips to learn about how you can be prepared before you hit the road this long weekend, courtesy of Public Safety Canada and Transport Canada.

Vehicle checklist before hitting the road

  • Check and replenish fluids, including oil, brake, radiator, and windshield fluids

  • Test and check your battery to ensure it's clean and all connections are correct

  • Check the physical condition and tire pressure

  • Check your lights to make sure they are working properly

Items to keep in your trunk

  • Windshield washer fluid

  • Tow rope

  • Jumper cables

  • Fire extinguisher

  • Warning light or road flares

Prepare an emergency kit

Always have safety and emergency equipment in your car. A basic car kit should contain the following:

  • Food that won't spoil, such as energy bars

  • Water, including plastic bottles that won't break if the water freezes (replace them every six months)

  • Blanket

  • Extra clothing and shoes or boots

  • First aid kit with seatbelt cutter

  • Candle in a deep can and matches

  • Wind‑up flashlight

  • Whistle in case you need to attract attention

  • Roadmaps

  • Copy of your emergency plan

These pre-road tips will not only help you tackle your long weekend journey but also when you're back from your relaxing time off. Summer driving requires as much attention as winter driving. Now that your vehicle is ready, it's time to pack your bag, hit the road, and make some memories.
