Over 600 divers set record for biggest ocean clean-up
The hard work of 663 divers has set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest ocean clean-up and collected more than 1500 pounds of trash and 60 pounds of fishing line.
The official weight of the collected trash is still being tallied and the ocean conservation group, Project AWARE, estimates that the final amount could be over 3,000 pounds.
Divers travelled from Europe and South America to participate in the event that was held at Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier in Florida this past weekend. This year marked the 15th anniversary of this clean-up, which lasted for about two hours.
The beach is a popular fishing destination and many of the divers remarked at the large amount of fishing equipment that has been discarded in the ocean. The city has reported that it will help with recycling the debris and safely will safely dispose of the other waste that cannot be reused.
It is estimated that every minute one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish by weight.
