Check out the winners of the 2024 Nikon Small World photo contest

This year's installment saw over 2,000 photo entries from 80 countries.

The winners of Nikon's Small World microphotography competition have been announced.

Now in its 50th year, the annual contest zooms in on tiny wonders, featuring images taken through a light microscope. Contestants come from all areas of expertise, ranging from scientists to hobbyists.

1st place: Differentiated mouse brain tumour cells

Nikon small world 1st - 2024 Cisterna Bruno

Dr. Bruno Cisterna, a research scientist at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia, took the top spot this year with his image of mouse brain tumour cells.

His work, which is published in the journal Cell Biology helps highlight how disruptions in the brain can contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

2nd place: Electrical arc between a pin and a wire

Nikon Small World - 2nd - 2024 Clemens Marcel

Dr. Marcel Clemens, an Italian astronomer and photographer, was captured with the help of a long exposure at 10X magnification.

3rd place: Leaf of a cannabis plant

NIKON small world - 3rd - 2024 Romaine Chris

In this entry, Chris Romaine of Port Townsend, Washington, showcases the plant's trichomes.

Trichomes are tiny hair-like structures that grow on the surface of plants, that can offer UV protection and thermal regulation. The 'bubbles' in the images are vesicles, which are membrane-bound sacs that can carry molecules, nutrients, or waste products.
