Everyday creatures look unbelievably spooky when you zoom in

The world looks different at the microscopic level.

It's spooky season, but these images you're seeing aren't from a horror movie.

In fact, at least one of the creatures you are about to see could be a few metres away from you at this very moment.

What you're looking at are some of the photo submissions from Nikon's annual Small World Photomicrography Competition. First place went to Grigorii Timin and Dr. Michel Milinkovitch of the University of Geneva for this striking image of the hand of an embryonic day gecko.

But the photo that's making the rounds on social media is this extreme close-up of an ant's face, captured by Eugenijus Kavaliauskas.

Kavaliauskas' photo has been shared thousands of times on social media. The image didn't make the contest's Top 20, but it did land on the 'Images of Distinction' list.

And what about this anemone larvae snapped by Wim Van Edmund? It looks like a ghost.
