Two earthquakes strike west of Vancouver Island, B.C.
The moderate earthquakes occurred within hours of each other
A 4.6 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 3 kilometres struck approximately 170 kilometres west of Port Hardy around 1:27 p.m. local time on Monday. Just over one hour later a 5.3 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometres struck 196 kilometres west of Port Hardy.
The National Tsunami Warning Centre said that a tsunami was not expected from either earthquake.
There have not been reports of anyone feeling the earthquake, as well as no reports of damage.
British Columbia is located along an active seismic zone where two tectonic plates converge, and relatively minor earthquakes are a regular occurrence near the coastlines.
