Sight to behold: Annual herring spawn transforms the B.C. coast
Every year, nature puts on a spectacular show along the British Columbia coast as the waters transform into a mesmerizing shade of turquoise during the annual herring spawn.
At the start of every spring, the oceans come alive off the coast of British Columbia, and it is all because of the herring.
Each March, the herring spawn in the waters near Vancouver Island. The females lay eggs on kelp and sea grass, while at the same time the males release milt, or sperm, into the ocean, creating a beautiful turquoise colour that almost looks like you are in the tropics.
This natural phenomenon draws a diverse array of marine creatures, from seagulls and eagles to majestic whales. Grey whales feast on the eggs, while orcas hunt the fish, creating a captivating spectacle of nature at play.
