Recent cold snap gives ice climbers a reason to celebrate in B.C.
The recent cold spell in B.C. has created ideal conditions for ice climbing. The Weather Network's Mia Gordon speaks with climber Tim Emmett, who shares his passion for the sport and thoughts behind what makes Squamish one of his favourite climbing destinations.
When the phrase "polar vortex" comes up, most people think about ways to escape the cold. However, Tim Emmett, a resident of British Columbia, has a different perspective.
Emmett discovered his passion for climbing at the young age of 15, and out of all the places he has explored, Squamish holds a special place in his heart.
While many B.C. locals opted to stay indoors during the recent Arctic outflow, Emmett eagerly embraced the opportunity for ice climbing. These freezing temperatures provided him with new routes to conquer, and one particular ascent in Squamish stood out as his favorite this season.
Joined by his close friends, professional freedivers and photographers Luca Malaguti, James Martinello, and Chris Christie, they embarked on an adventure to a hidden frozen waterfall. Utilizing paddle boards, they navigated the icy terrain and triumphed over the challenging summit.
According to Emmett, one of the greatest aspects of Squamish is its accessibility for both experts and beginners. For those interested in taking up the sport, he offers two essential pieces of advice: find an experienced climber who can serve as a mentor and guide, ensuring your safety, and acquire the proper gear that provides warmth and flexibility for unhindered movement.
