A trip to the beach near Gloucester, Massachusetts took a turn for the worse on August 9 when windy conditions began to move in.

A 13-year-old boy was impaled in his left shoulder by a beach umbrella that got swept up in the wind.

Beachgoers say that everything unfolded very quickly and the teenager's mother began calling for the lifeguards when she realized her son was injured.

Bystanders rushed to help the boy who was bleeding badly by the time that the firefighters arrived at the scene.

Lt. Nick Oullette of Gloucester Fire says that the people on the beach were surprisingly calm considering that this type of injury is such a rare occurrence.

The boy is reportedly healing from his injury and other beachgoers say that they learned a lesson and will make an extra effort to take down their umbrellas when they are not in use.
