Storms may tip parts of the Maritimes to the wettest July on record
Several communities in the Maritimes are on the verge of seeing their wettest July ever observed
This is likely going to be the wettest July ever recorded for parts of Nova Scotia as weekend thunderstorms target areas hit by torrential rains in recent days.
Folks across the region should prepare for a potentially stormy Saturday as thunderstorms bubble up in a humid air mass parked over the Maritimes. Some of the storms could turn severe in New Brunswick.

Tropical downpours washed over the Maritimes earlier this week as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl rolled through the area. Stations throughout Nova Scotia reported more than 100 mm of rain over the course of several hours on Thursday, which caused flash flooding and damage in spots.
Margaretsville saw 133.3 mm of rain during the downpours, while Somerset came in with 125.2 mm in the gauge by the time rain finally came to an end.
Folks in Kentville are on the verge of seeing their wettest July on record. The community has seen 183.9 mm of rain in the past week, bringing the month’s total to a whopping 190.2 mm. We just need 10.3 mm of additional rainfall this month to make this the wettest July ever recorded in Kentville. Records here began back in 1913.
It’s a similar story over in Greenwood, where records started back in 1942. We’ve seen some of the wettest July days on record there with 153.2 mm of rain observed since the beginning of the month. This is the seventh-wettest July on record in Greenwood, and the community needs 77.3 mm more rain this month to make this the wettest July in the books.
There’s more rain on the horizon for a region that certainly could use a break from it. Saturday will see a risk for thunderstorms build throughout the Maritimes.
Severe thunderstorms are possible near the international border in New Brunswick, where the stronger cells could produce large hail, strong wind gusts, and heavy rainfall. Non-severe storms are expected across much of Nova Scotia.
If a thunderstorm hits Kentville, the town is likely to rack up enough rain to break its July rainfall record just 13 days into the month.
