Stormy pattern continues through the mid-week on the Prairies

The stormy pattern that has dominated over the Prairies the past few days will persist through mid-week.

Scattered storms have dominated over the Prairies since the weekend, with several tornado warnings being issued across southern Saskatchewan on Saturday and Sunday.

As we head into mid-week, the storm threat on the Prairies hasn't gone anywhere.

While Manitoba got a bit of reprieve from Monday's storm risk, it's Alberta who will avoid the active weather on Tuesday.

By Wednesday, all three Prairie provinces will have a chance to see their share of stormy weather, with a severe risk for each province.

Chance for supercells, large hail in Saskatchewan and Manitoba Tuesday

Thunderstorms will begin to develop across Saskatchewan late Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. Storms could linger into the overnight hours on Tuesday.

Southeastern Saskatchewan has a greater risk of seeing stronger isolated storms. Eastern Saskatchewan, however, is where the strongest storm potential is, with the possibility of supercells developing around the Yorkton area and towards the Manitoba border.

This area will have the strongest atmospheric energy for storm development, as well as a greater amount of upper-level spin due to its close proximity to the centre of low pressure. It is possible, therefore, for some supercells that develop to have rotation.

Large hail will be the primary threat with Tuesday's storms, especially across central Saskatchewan.

In Manitoba, gusty winds will be a big threat, especially through the Interlake region as well as areas around and north of Dauphin.

Storms will likely be slow moving, so localized flooding could be a risk with prolonged heavy downpours all three Prairie provinces Wednesday.

Another punch of atmospheric energy on Wednesday will lend itself to another day of stormy weather across the Prairies.

Another low-pressure system will slide into the region from the north, along with a cold front, giving the atmosphere the instability it needs for more storm development through the afternoon and evening hours.

Strong, gusty winds will be a big threat on Wednesday, as well as large hail in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

While southern Albertans aren't strangers to large hail, many Calgarians are probably still recovering after the damaging hailstorm that struck the city earlier this month.

Hail sizes and severity

Large hail can not only damage buildings and vehicles but also cause severe bodily harm to people caught outside in it. Remember to keep an eye on local alerts and to take shelter whenever threatening weather approaches.
