Sudden summer for parts of Canada – does it last for the long weekend?
With the unofficial first long weekend of summer not far off, not every part of Canada will feel like it's getting its share of warmth.
It is hard to believe that the May long weekend (and the unofficial kickoff to summer) is just a week away, given the lack of warm weather that we have seen across Canada so far during May.
The first half of May featured colder-than-seasonal temperatures from coast to coast, as highlighted by the various shades of blue and green on the temperature anomaly map below.
However, we are already in the midst of a major pattern reversal, with summer-like weather spreading across central Canada this week.
As we look ahead to the May long weekend, we expect that warmer weather will finally spread into the Maritimes, but we will see some unsettled weather as well.
The warmest weather across the country for this weekend will be found across Ontario and Quebec as this region will continue to see a taste of summer. Meanwhile, below seasonal temperatures will continue to spread east across the Prairies, along with some much needed rain. B.C. will enjoy temperatures within a few degrees of seasonal.
