Evacuation order issued due to a landslide near Nelson, B.C.
Landslide on Little Slocan South Road, in the community of Vallican, B.C., prompts evacuation order Tuesday night
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) issued evacuation orders for three properties in a West Kootenay community near Nelson, B.C. due to a mudslide on Tuesday.
The properties on Little Slocan South Road, in the community of Vallican, were ordered to leave their homes immediately. An Evacuation Alert was also issued for an additional five properties on Little Slocan South Road, meaning residents must be prepared to leave with little to no notice.
"Due to darkness, a full assessment of the area by a geotechnical engineer via helicopter will not be able to be completed until tomorrow morning," said Stephane Coutu, RDCK EOC Director in a statement Tuesday night. "As a result we have issued the Evacuation Order for three properties and Little Slocan South Road will be closed in both directions until further notice."

Emergency support services are being provided for the three properties that have been evacuated, and residents will not be able to return home until given permission by local officials when conditions are clear and safe.

Residents are also urged to report further landslide activity in the area by calling the provincial emergency coordination centre at 1.800.663.3456.
